PHOENIX – Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Ricardo Arjona has invited local immigrant families to help kickoff a four-day immigrants rights “bus tour” at Comerica Theatre tonight – part of nationwide push involving hundreds of immigrant families and thousands of immigration activists that was launched Monday in Chicago.

A press conference hosted by Promise Arizona about the state and nationwide efforts is scheduled in Phoenix tonight for 6 p.m. at Comerica Theatre, 400 W Washington St, Phoenix, AZ. (Note: reporters interested in reporting on tonight’s concert are required to seek press credentials at 4 p.m. in the lobby of the theatre.)

“Ricardo Arjona’s willingness to speak out and sing about the plight of immigrants is inspiring and it helps spread the word that it’s time to end the suffering that immigrant families are facing under our nation’s current policy,” said Petra Falcon, executive director of Promise Arizona.

To raise awareness about the need for immigration reform, staff and volunteers from Promise Arizona will host a vigil outside Comerica Theatre starting at 1 p.m. today and encouraging passersby to call Members of Congress to act on the issue and protect immigrant families.

Tonight also kicks off a four-day statewide tour in which activists and immigrant families will visit the offices of Members of Congress to extend personal invitations for them to attend a major immigrants’ rights rally and revival on Saturday, March 2, 10 a.m. to noon, at First Institutional Baptist Church, 1141 East Jefferson St., Phoenix.

Community leaders and public officials from across the state have been invited to attend the March 2 event. Falcon said hundreds of Promise Arizona supporters will fan out in area neighborhoods after Saturday’s rally to register new voters and boost support for comprehensive immigration reform. (Anyone wanting to attend the rally, which is free and open to the public, or volunteer that day is asked to call 602-910-2527.)

“Immigration reform is happening this year because Latino voters turned out in record numbers in November,” said Falcon. “We intend to keep reminding our Members of Congress and our state’s leadership of that fact every step of the way as the debate over U.S. immigration policy continues.”

Promise Arizona volunteers also will be helping to man a continuous phone bank this week calling on Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake of Arizona and other Members of Congress in the state to support immigration reform.

“The message we want public officials and community leaders to receive is that today’s immigration system is outdated, inefficient and harmful to immigrant families,” said Falcon, “and it’s time we replaced it with a system that respects the social and economic contributions of millions of immigrant families.”

The Arizona bus tour is part of the national “Keeping Families Together Campaign” led by the Fair Immigration Reform Movement. The campaign involves dozens of immigrants’ rights groups across the country and was organized to advocate for legislative reforms that reaffirm the sanctity of families and expose the damage being done to immigrant communities by current federal policy.

A native of Guatemala, Arjona has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and is a vocal supporter of U.S. immigration reform. Several immigrant families have been invited to attend Arjona’s concert and will relay stories of their experiences living and working in the United States—particularly in the wake of the passage of Senate Bill 1070, a draconian immigration law passed in 2010, most of which has since been overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Arjona plans to meet personally with the family of Eddie Garcia, an immigrant from Guatemala, whose family was nearly torn apart when immigration authorities in Phoenix threatened to deport him. Garcia was eventually released thanks to pressure from immigrants’ rights organizations.

During his concert tonight, Arjona will perform his recently released international hit song “Mojado” (“Wetback” - http://tinyurl.com/a2uoctg), which recounts the experiences of undocumented immigrants who journey to the United States.

The Arizona leg of the national bus tour will begin in Phoenix and include stopovers in Tucson and Yuma. Promise Arizona has invited 1,000 immigrants and supporters of immigrants’ rights to attend the March 2 rally and revival in honor of the estimated 1,000 immigrants who get deported from the United States every day under current immigration policy.

More than 500 immigrant families are taking part in regional bus tours across the country, according to Fair Immigration Reform Movement, and immigrants’ rights groups in 19 states, 90 cities, and more than 40 Congressional districts around the country will participate.
